News ArchiveVL2 international meeting hosted in IsraelOctober 28, 2009 Dr. Peter C. Hauser, Director of VL2’s Neurocognitive Research Initiative and his research associate, Erin Spurgeon, recently attended a VL2 international meeting in Haifa, Israel on October 13-15, 2009. The conference was hosted at the University of Haifa by Dr. Paul Miller, and welcomed collaborators, Dr. Tevhide Gargin and Birkan Guldenoglu from the University of Ankara, Turkey. Researchers presented their ideas for the ongoing, international VL2 project, “A Systematic, Developmental Skill-oriented Investigation of Poor and Proficient Deaf Readers from Different Countries.” Collaborators are pleased to have laid the foundations for a research program that will assess the meta-linguistic, memory and word coding strategies for year two of this project, in an effort to develop a more effective reading theory for deaf students. During their visit to Israel, the research team visited a deaf classroom the Carmel Zvulun School in Yagur. Dr. Hauser presented to a class of roughly 30 deaf students about his area of psychology and research and how it can be used to help improve the lives of deaf people. Students asked Dr. Hauser questions about his life and work and shared many of their own experiences and feelings. Following their meeting in Haifa, Dr. Hauser and Erin met with Dr. Carol Padden, VL2’s Interim Science Director, and her research team (Dr. Wendy Sandler and Dr. Mark Aranoff) at the Al-Sayyid Bedouin village near Be’er Sheba, Israel. The village consists of approximately 4,000 people and almost 200 who are deaf. The Bedouin community uses both Al-Sayyid and Israeli Sign Languages, both by hearing and deaf members. The Bedouins were extremely hospitable and Dr. Hauser and Erin were able to meet several families and learn a little Al-Sayyid Sign Language. |
