EL2 conducts studies of individual differences among deaf children in their literacy development in authentic early education settings. EL2 accomplishes this through conducting classroom and home-based studies focusing on the factors that contribute to the development of literacy in deaf children..

Another important role of EL2 is serving as the nexus for providing strong infrastructure support to the research community in the areas of ASL assessment, data sharing, and research volunteer recruitment. EL2 provides research design and statistical expertise and develops and distributes toolkits to measure young deaf children’s language and cognitive development.
