PEN Distinguished Lecture Series
The PEN Distinguished Lecture Series in Educational Neuroscience was created in association with the Foundations Proseminar course for graduate students in the Ph.D. in Educational Neuroscience (PEN) program. Since its inception, the series has grown!
The lecture series focuses on the intersection of the Science of Learning (learning across the lifespan) and Educational Neuroscience (learning across early life). Scientists and researchers who are pioneers in the fields of Cognitive-Educational Neuroscience, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, and Child Development come to Gallaudet University's campus to talk about their research.

Biography
Dr. Fumiko Hoeft, MD, PhD, is Professor of Psychological Sciences, Neuroscience and Psychiatry, and Director of the Brain Imaging Research Center (BIRC) at University of Connecticut (UConn). She also holds appointments at the UCSF Dyslexia Center, Psychiatry and Weill Institute for Neurosciences, and Haskins Laboratories.
Dr. Hoeft is a developmental cognitive neuroscientist interested in reading and dyslexia and factors associated with learning more broadly. She received research training at Harvard, UCLA, Caltech and Stanford, and held faculty positions at Stanford, UCSF and UConn.
Recent honors include awards from the IDA (2014), Learning & the Brain Foundation (2015), International Mind Brain & Education Society (IMBES; 2018), Society for Neuroscience (SfN; 2018) and Eye to Eye (2019), with many of these on science education and translation of neuroscience to the public.
Dr. Hoeft has published over 140 articles, reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered over 210 keynotes, talks and workshops at venues such as local schools, International conferences, TEDx and the White House.
Her work has been widely covered in the media such as The New York Times, NPR, CNN, the New Yorker, and Scientific American. She also serves on many boards at organizations such as the IDA, NCLD and Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC).
