Josh Allmann

Computer Science
RIT

A self-proclaimed computer scientist from Irvine, California, Josh Allmann works with Peter Hauser's Deaf Studies Lab at RIT. At DSL, he writes the software powering various VL2 tests, including those for depiction, implicit association and sentence reproduction.
At RIT, Josh is pursuing his Masters in Computer Science, with an emphasis in Computer Vision. His current research involves object tracking in compressed video. He uses motion vectors and other features available in encoded bitstreams to ease the computational overhead required for tracking and analysis.

Other interests include multimedia delivery over V/VoIP networks, fast/on-demand transcoding, and multimedia applications for low-power/embedded systems.

In Josh's own words: "If I had time for a second life, I would research automatic and bootstrappable techniques for natural language processing. In particular, I am interested in sentence parsing and part-of-speech tagging, and in language generation. Tangentially, I also enjoy the study of programming paradigms, functional languages and compilers."

Routinely (and when not in close proximity to a computer), Josh reads books and newspapers, plays water polo, and does stuff outdoors.
