Jeremy Purcell

Cognitive Neuroscience
Georgetown University

Jeremy is originally from Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in physiology and psychology in 2003. Jeremy moved out to Washington D.C. in 2005 to attend graduate school at Georgetown University’s interdisciplinary program in neuroscience and am currently a third year graduate student. His research interests are to use both behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to better understand how language and motor systems interact in order to communicate via keyboard typing.  Specifically, Jeremy's interests pertain to how, through experience, individuals can produce typed text on a standard keyboard fluently and naturally with minimal conscious effort as compared to individuals for whom this process is not as automatic.   The automaticity with which one can spell out their thoughts while typing provides a fascinating model for investigating how the brain can adapt to effortlessly translating words to sequences of motor commands. This project will be the focus of his thesis research. Jeremy's long term career goals are to continue in academia and become an instructor and researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience.
