Integration of Research & Education
Kristen Harmon

VL2 Communications Officer/IRE Team Leader
Gallaudet University

Dr. Kristen Harmon is the new Communications Officer and Integration of Research and Education (IRE) Team Leader for VL2. In addition to developing products related to IRE work and overseeing the IRE program at VL2, Dr. Harmon focuses on developing, coordinating and communicating internal and external information related to VL2 and its partners. Though Dr. Harmon joined the staff of VL2 recently, she began her career at Gallaudet University in 1999, teaching undergraduate courses in the English department; presently, she holds an appointment as a tenured Professor of English. Dr. Harmon brings to VL2 a wealth of knowledge integration and synthesis strategies from her experiences in educational, occupational, and sociocultural arenas. She graduated summa cum laude from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, then continued her studies at the University of Missouri at Columbia where she earned her Master’s Degree and Doctorate in English. Dr. Harmon has published extensively in several academic areas and her creative fiction and nonfiction has been featured in journals and anthologies. Her eye for crisp, incisive prose has aided VL2 greatly in making its interdisciplinary research more accessible to the public.

Dr. Harmon was born deaf and educated in mainstream schools, but became immersed in the Deaf community in her twenties. She was born in Louisiana, and raised in Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Currently, Dr. Harmon lives in Maryland with her family, including a 7-year-old Deaf son, who came originally from Ethiopia. In her spare time, she enjoys backpacking and camping with her family.
