VL2 is an international center that includes researchers and educators from many locations and disciplines. A primary goal of VL2 is to include teams of deaf and hearing researchers from multiple disciplines to help define and carry out the research agenda. In the current start-up year, the primary work of VL2 is being carried out by the Scientific Management Team (SMT), representing 8 different institutions. The SMT is comprised of a PI, an Administrative Director, 2 Science Directors, 5 domain leaders, an engineering consultant, and 2 evaluators. Students from Gallaudet and all the partner institutions participate in VL2 in many ways: as undergraduate interns, as graduate assistants, and as pre-doctoral fellows. VL2 students also participate in an active student network that allows for rich interaction with students from across the virtual center and all of the participating institutions. The student organization is led by a Student Leadership Team (SLT) that meets online regularly and coordinates communication among all VL2 students. The SLT has regular meetings with the Center PI and brings issues of concern to the Center management. VL2 also offers a variety of services to graduate and undergraduate students who are affiliated with VL2 research, including: access to research grants to aid in their research, support for travel to professional meetings, and networking opportunities.
