Dr. Chip Gerfen received his Ph.D in Linguistics from the University of Arizona in 1996 and is currently an Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics at Penn State University. He received his training in Phonology and Phonetics, and his current research focuses on experimental approaches to the representation and cognitive processing of language, with particular focus on language processing in bilinguals.
Currently, he is collaborating with Dr. Pilar Piņar (Gallaudet University) and Dr. Judy Kroll on a project funded by an NSF supplement grant Reading and speaking words in two languages: A psycholinguistic approach to bilingualism (Judith F. Kroll, principal investigator; Paola Dussias, Chip Gerfen and Pilar Piņar, Co-Investigators). The project examines how studying a foreign language (Spanish) affects reading processes in Deaf readers of English. He is also co-Principal Investigator of NIH-Grant R56-HD053146 (Principal Investigator, Judith F. Kroll; Maya Misra, co-PI, Tao Mei Guo, co-PI), Cognitive processes in bilinguals, a large-scale project examining inhibitory control in bilingual language processing.
