Len Kelly

Reading and cognition
Gallaudet University

Dr. Leonard Kelly has been a member of the Gallaudet Research Institute since 1987. His doctorate is in Educational Psychology and Evaluation from the Catholic University of America, where his dissertation examined the attention demands imposed by the grammatical decision making of deaf writers. His work since has sought a better understanding of the cognitive processes of deaf readers, and it has been guided by theory stipulating the interactive nature of multiple cognitive processes during reading. These studies have included examinations of syntactic processing, phonological processing, automaticity of reading processes, working memory, and a training strategy to improve understanding of sentences with challenging syntactic structures. In collaboration with Dr. Dragana Barac-Cikoja, Dr. Kelly is now beginning a project that will test the efficacy of an approach to teaching deaf readers new words by connecting the meanings of a word’s morphemes to their representation in sign language.

Dr. Kelly’s other duties include administering a research grant program for faculty, staff and students on Gallaudet University campus, and this assignment comprises setting and administering policy related to project budgets, scope, and scholarly merit. He is also a reviewer for scholarly journals in his field, and he is the past vice-chair of the University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Prior to joining the Research Institute, Dr. Kelly held a position as an evaluation specialist in a center that developed instructional methods, materials, and programs for deaf students, from pre-school through graduate school. His hobbies include dancing and tennis, and for 14 years he has conducted weekend Jeopardy-style quiz games at senior residences in the Washington, D.C. area
