Judith Mounty

Language Planning/ASL Assessment
Gallaudet University


Dr. Judith Mounty joined the Language Planning Institute/Center for ASL English Billingual Education and Reserch (CAEBER) in August 2007 as a Research Scientist. She brings a unique perspective acquired during many years of interdisciplinary experience as a teacher, teacher educator, researcher, program administrator, and social worker. Dr. Mounty has worked at Gallaudet University for 11 years. The first two years, she served as the first deaf woman to hold the Powrie Vaux Doctor Chair of Deaf Studies and worked with various university departments and programs on literacy and bilingual language assessment. She then directed the Center for American Sign Language Literacy for nine years. Prior coming to Gallaudet, Dr. Mounty worked at the Educational Testing Service and, while there, she developed the Signed Language Development checklist (for tracking ASL development) and led the development of the Praxis Series: Professional Assessment for Beginning Teachers subject assessment in education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. In addition to her work at Gallaudet, Dr. Mounty provides mental health intervention for deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their families.
