SFA 5: Integration of Research and Education-Student Training for the Next Generation

The goal of this SFA is to train a new generation of scientists, skilled in interdisciplinary methods for advancing the Science of Learning of Visual Language and Visual Learning leading to a sustainable community of scholars, both deaf and hearing, pursuing transformative research contributing to the advancement of the body of knowledge known as the Science of Learning and its tangible discipline, called Educational Neuroscience. (Peter Hauser, Leader)

VL2 provides education and training to emerging scientists at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels in the interdisciplinary study of visual language and visual learning. Over the years, VL2 has also established an effective student network of both deaf and hearing students at undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels attending universities throughout the VL2 network. These students are pursuing advanced degrees in a variety of disciplines ranging from the cognitive and educational neurosciences, child development, linguistics, clinical psychology, and education.

We continue to support and develop better training opportunities, extensive inter-lab student internships, rich opportunities for research and conference participation, innovations in student training, and new degree options for VL2 trainees—especially through our exciting creation of the new PhD in Educational Neuroscience (PEN) program at Gallaudet University.
