VL2 hosts students orientation for the first time

August 31, 2009

During the weekend of August 28-30, the Center hosted a students orientation, where we had 22 students in attendance to learn the ropes of VL2 and services. We had Gabrielle Jones (PhD student at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) lead the orientation by opening with an introductory presentation on VL2's structure and research agenda.

Tom Allen was there to explain the inner workings of VL2's Scientific Management Team, as well as give insights on the early days of VL2 and how the research agenda was shaped.

We had Dr. Barbara Schirmer (University of Detroit) discuss tips on creating and disseminating publications on research work. Her insightful presentation was lined with her own experiences in working on various publications and submitting them to journals. After her, Connie Pucci took the stage to explain the IRB process and VL2's approach in ensuring equal access on both, text and video.

In the afternoon there was a grant writing panel with Drs. Tom Allen, Judy Harkins, and Matt Bakke, bringing their experience with handling large grants to the table.

Afterwards, the Student Leadership Team (SLT) had a business meeting and students grouped up to discuss agenda, ideas, and responsibilities for the academic year to come.
