Early Education Literacy Lab (EL2)

The Early Education Literacy Lab (EL2) has emerged as an outgrowth of the VL2 Early Education Longitudinal Study (EELS). It conducts studies of individual differences among deaf children in their literacy development in authentic early education settings. It also serves as the nexus for providing strong infrastructure support to the research community in areas of ASL Assessment, Data Sharing, and Research Volunteer Recruitment.

Early Educational Longitudinal Study
Early Educational Longitudinal Study
The VL2 Early Education Longitudinal Study collected extensive data on a national sample of deaf preschool aged children over a three year period (from 2010 to 2013). Data included yearly direct assessments of language, literacy and cognitive skills, indirect assessments of home and school characteristics through family and teacher surveys, and school policy characteristics collected from program administrators. The data base is currently being used to test hypotheses about the interrelationships among school and family characteristics, and student outcomes.
VL2 Data Sharing Project
VL2 Data Sharing Project
The VL2 Data Sharing Project provides an online portal for access to information about VL2 research projects. It gives descriptions, methods, codebooks, links to papers, and access to sharable data from these projects for future secondary analysis.
VL2 Assessment Toolkit and Online Portal
VL2 Assessment Toolkit and Online Portal
VL2 has supported the development and psychometric analysis of a number of measures of ASL, as well as of a number of adapted measures of neurocognitive skills, administered in ASL.
VL2 Research Volunteer Program
VL2 Research Volunteer Program
EL2 recruits volunteers of all ages to be listed in a secure online data base. Using information from a short background questionnaire administered to deaf volunteers (or to parents of deaf children) at the time that they "sign-up", we are able to match volunteers with researchers conducting VL2 research.
