project 32 -- Investigation of poor and proficient readers

NCF 6: Investigation of poor and proficient readers in different countries (Miller, Hauser, Rathmann, Allen):

Some prelingually deaf children become excellent readers, but many do not. If we can understand that factors helped the successful readers, we may be able to apply them to help the less successful. We are performing a systematic investigation of deaf readers of different skill levels, exploring their abilities to process text at word, sentence, and paragraph levels. Their performance is being compared to normally developing hearing readers, on the one hand, and hearing readers with reading difficulties such as dyslexia. To clarify whether the difficulties experienced by deaf readers are influenced by the writing system they use, the project is being done with readers who use Hebrew, Arabic, English, and German. We expect that the results will contribute toward an integrated theory of deaf reading.
