project 31 -- A meta-analysis of phonological coding in deaf readers

NCF 5: A meta-analysis of phonological coding in deaf readers (Mayberry, Lieberman & del Giudice):

The literature on how deaf children learn to read is contradictory, particularly with regard to the role of phonological coding. While some studies have found a correlation between phonological coding and reading in deaf readers, other studies have found little or no such relationship. Differences among studies are likely due to factors such as wide variation in methodology and background characteristics of participants, among others.. We are doing a meta-analysis of the literature on phonological coding and reading in deaf readers in order to determine the effect size for this phenomenon. Results from this meta-analysis will provide insight into research approaches that will be most useful for subsequent projects in VL2’s research program that address phonological coding in deaf readers and provide guidance for reading pedagogy.
