project 28 -- Development of auditory cortical responses

NCF 2: The role of visual language input in the development of auditory cortical responses (Corina):

We are investigating whether experience with a visual language affects the development of primary auditory cortex and language functioning in young cochlear implant recipients. To do this, we are using electrophysiological techniques to measure auditory cortex maturation and neural responses to spoken and signed words. We are also collecting behavioral measures of signed and spoken word recognition. The resulting information is helping us foster a dialogue among stakeholders in the development and education of severely and profoundly deaf children. We believe that our collaborative efforts will lead to new evidence-based policies that promote linguistic competency in deaf children.
