Initiatives & Projectsproject 22 -- Temporal Representations in ASL Description of EventsLCF 2: Temporal Representations in ASL Descriptions of Events (Dudis):
The overarching question this project addresses is the extent to which temporal depiction figures in the grammar and discourse of ASL. In this project, we are specifically interested in the typology of constructions in ASL that make use of an extended temporal representation. To increase this project's relevance to VL2’s central research concern, viz. the English literacy of deaf children, a supplemental question concerns one particular bilingual approach. This approach is currently conceived as one that is somewhat akin to the translation model of language learning, but coupled with the indigenous, DEAF POSS+ linguistic and communicative interaction by skilled ASL-English bilinguals who possess high metalinguistic awareness in both languages. The supplemental question as it now stands pertains to the degree to which the structures of the ASL constructions and the nearest English equivalents are comparable. We expect to find greater incidence of temporal representation in the ASL description of events that are understood to have close temporal relationship, e.g. those that occur in sequence or those that have a cause-effect relationship, than in the ASL description of single events. Additionally, we expect to see a correlation between depiction and event complexity in comparison of ASL and English expressions, i.e. the more complex the English expression describing an event, the greater the incidence of event depiction in the ASL counterpart.
