Initiatives & Projectsproject 20 -- Effects of different word parsing strategies on word learningILM 11: Effects of different word parsing strategies on word learning (Barac-Cikoja & Kelly):
We are determining whether deaf adults learn new English words and ASL signs better when the pedagogical emphasis is placed on meaning and visual processing. Classical pedagogies stress their auditory/visual composition (e.g. syllables, handshapes) or teach them as single, unanalyzed units. We believe these strategies may be suboptimal. Our participants are learning words of an invented language under conditions that vary in their emphasis on word structure. A control group is being shown whole words only, with no emphasis on their composition. Outcomes are measured by looking at (a) word acquisition rate during training, (b) recognition accuracy and speed after training and after one week, and (c) accuracy in matching newly learned words to their target signs after training and after one week. The results will have considerable ramifications for language training. Related Initiatives:
