project 19 -- Guessing Game: Word Attack Strategies for Vocabulary Development

ILM 10: Guessing Game: Word Attack Strategies for Vocabulary Development (Clark):

This study evaluates deaf individuals’ ability to use phonological and morphological knowledge when identifying words and their meanings. First-year deaf university students were presented with very rare English words and asked to select a corresponding meaning on a multiple-choice task. Results showed that students who entered college with higher English Placements had better word attack strategies for both total number of monomorphemic and multimorphemic words. However, the study found no effect of phonological awareness on entry reading levels, even though many participants did demonstrate phonological awareness.
