project 18 -- Socio-cultural contexts for bilingual learners

ILM 9: Socio-cultural contexts for bilingual learners: a survey of parents and teachers of deaf students (Nover, Mounty & Pucci):

This project is performing a survey of parents and teachers of deaf students to capture the insights that parents and deaf professionals bring to nurturing reading acquisition. Our semi-structured interviews focus on several issues, including the following: bilingual ASL/English acquisition and use, the relationship between the two languages, and the characteristics of bilingual readers who are transitioning from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” The data gleaned from these interviews are being used to develop an online survey of a national sample of deaf parents and teachers.
