project 14 -- Self-paced reading

ILM 5: Self-paced reading (Corina, Traxler, Morford):

We are comparing how proficient deaf and hearing readers extract meaning from text. We’re doing this by obtaining measures such as the mean reading times for different classes of words (nouns, verbs, etc.) and the frequency of regressions (that is, returns to previously read words). The results are showing us what properties are most important for lexical access and text comprehension by deaf readers. With those, we are proceeding to investigate how the baseline measures change when orthographic, grammatical and distributional characteristics of the text are selectively altered. The data from these studies will guide the development of texts for fMRI studies of sentence processing.
