Initiatives & Projectsproject 15 -- Neural basis ASL fingerspelling and text readingILM 6: Neural basis ASL fingerspelling and text reading (Emmorey, Corina, Eden, Hauser & Bavelier):
fMRI is being used to investigate a) the functional neuroanatomy for reading written vs. fingerspelled words and b) the influence of fingerspelling on the ability to learn new words and the cortical circuitry recruited to subsequently read those words. We are interested in examining common regions that demonstrate overlap for the lexical properties of fingerspelling and English reading, divorced from the processes involved in temporal-sequential and form processing. Of considerable interest will be to evaluate how these variables relate as a degree of reading proficiency. Our expectation is that for proficient readers the inferior parietal region will serve as a computational hub for the integration of letters, consistent with previous studies of spelling.
