Initiatives & Projectsproject 11 -- Neural correlates of cross-language lexical activationILM 2: Neural correlates of cross-language lexical activation in ASL-English Bilinguals (Morford, Hauser, Eden, Corina, Bavelier & Emmorey):
In a follow-up study to ILM 1, we seek to determine the neural level at which cross-lexical interferences arise. Specifically, do the phonological interference effects observed when ASL signers read English words arise in brain regions which support native ASL phonological sub-lexical processing, or are they mediated via other connections due to amodal semantic representations (or some as of yet unidentified association region)? We will use data from our other fMRI studies (VLAS 5 and VLAS 9) to define regions of interest (ROIs) that represent both modality dependant representation and amodal and or associative activations.
