This study is investigating the hypothesis that proficient adult deaf readers activate ASL translation equivalents of English print during word recognition. Participants are shown two English words and asked to judge whether the words are semantically similar or different. The theory behind the experiment runs as follows: if ASL is activated during word recognition, participants should answer more quickly if the equivalent ASL words have similar handshapes. For example, the English pairs brother, sister and bath, shower are both semantically similar, but in ASL the first pair is visually similar while the second is not – and we hypothesize that for that reason, ASL users will answer more quickly when presented with the first. We are performing further investigations using brain imaging tools such as evoked-response potentials (ERP) and functional MRI.Related Initiatives:
