project 7 -- Investigation of the development of thinking and reading skills

VLAS 7: Five-year longitudinal and cross-sectional investigation of the development of higher order thinking skills and acquisition of reading skills in children from ages 3-9 (Kuntze):

This study is examining how deaf children acquire English reading skills in an ASL-oriented learning environment. Specifically, it is studying how ASL-using adults and children interact while reading books together – a crucial element of English language acquisition. Through book sharing, adults show children how skilled readers engage with the content. We are identifying the kinds of prompts, questions, and scaffolding activities that yield the most effective learning outcomes. We are also developing new assessment tools for evaluating reading skills in deaf children. Data are being collected by videotaping naturalistic classroom interactions.
