project 3 -- Deaf children with sign language disorders

VLAS 3: Deaf children with sign language disorders (Quinto-Pozos, Singleton):

Between 5-10% of young hearing children experience language and communication disorders such as problems with grammar and difficulties with pronunciation. A percentage of young deaf children likely experience language disorders with signed language, but little research has been done on what they are, let alone on how to treat them. We are identifying what the specific problems are, focusing on deaf children of signing deaf parents to eliminate factors caused by delayed acquisition of language. We are also investigating if, and how, performance on non-linguistic spatial tasks predicts language problems with ASL. Success in these aims will help researchers create diagnostic tests and strategies for intervention.
