project 2 -- Online collection of ASL vocabulary

VLAS 2: Online collection of frequency and "age of acquisition" rating of ASL vocabulary (Corina, Emmorey, Morford):

We have created a database of familiarity ratings and “age of acquisition” (AoA) ratings for ASL signs. This database is an essential tool for constructing ASL stimuli sets for psycholinguistic studies. Such a tool is important because the familiarity and AoA of a lexical item has an effect on how quickly it is recognized and produced. For spoken languages, frequency counts are estimated from text corpora of over a million words. For ASL, such corpora do not exist. Research has shown, however, that familiarity ratings are as accurate as text counts for predicting response times in lexical decision experiments. Familiarity ratings are being collected from adult ASL signers who view ASL signs via web-based technology. Age of acquisition (the age that a lexical item is first encountered) is another determinant of speed of lexical activation. AoAs are being rated by asking native and near-native signers to estimate when they learned a given sign.
