initiative 4 -- Linguistic and Communicative Forms in a Visual Modality
This initiative investigates how a language is actualized in a visual modality. What does the form of a signed language tell us about optimization of visual communication systems? Does the use of sign languages provide a privileged access to the mapping of conceptualized knowledge into language? The deep understanding of principles of sign usage and expertise in theoretical linguistic theory provide new opportunities for probing fundamental question regarding the relationships between language and cognition.
